I wrote my first sestina, basing it on the plot of the hit '80s sitcom Twin Peaks, directed by David Lynch. I found the sestina as a form restrictive and hard to maneuver in, especially when trying to implement a regular meter. I also lacked the benefit of my core poetry text, which should arrive this week from some used bookstore in England, and had to resort to wikipedia and other online sources. I look forward to writing an ode this week, which is a form familiar from such poems as Shelley's Ode to the West Wind. I can't say I'm very pleased with my sestina, although if I were to write another I believe a comic theme would be more suitable.
